Toronto, Ontario – (Marketwired – Jan. 29, 2014) – Canadian auto sales had another banner year, with light vehicle sales growing for the third consecutive time, with the industry on track for another solid year, according to a new report by BMO Economics.

• Third consecutive year auto sales have grown, up 10 per cent since 2011
  • Innovation in auto manufacturing fueling consumer demand

Preliminary numbers indicate the industry saw continued growth with light vehicle sales – which comprise all passenger grade vehicles and exclude trucks larger than the standard pickup – jumping to 1.74 million units sold in 2013, an increase of 4 per cent since the previous year (1.68 million units sold) and a 10 per cent increase since 2011 (1.59 million units sold).

“A solid model lineup and new offerings from manufacturers at very generous financing terms will continue to generate interest from the Canadian consumer,” said Alex Koustas, Economist, BMO Capital Markets. “Sales activity will remain brisk, but will likely drop off last year’s pace given rising ownership rates and more elevated debt levels. Nevertheless an overheating is unlikely as long as financing terms remain balanced.”

Mr. Koustas predicts that auto sales will slide marginally from 1.78 million units in 2013 to 1.71 million units in 2014. Despite this drop in projected volumes in 2014, projected auto sales for the year are still expected to mark the third best performance on record.

Factors Fueling Auto Sales

Mr. Koustas notes that continued investments in the auto industry are helping to fuel growth. Factors such as technological advancements and improved fuel economy in every segment, from compact cars to full-sized pickups, have helped with the continued growth. For example:

• Boom in Auto Loans: Since 2009, Canadian automotive loan balances have increased by a staggering 165 per cent, compared to a mere 35 per cent in total consumer loans. With loans showing some of the best performance on record and rates expected to remain low, it’s likely that the credit wheels should remain well-greased over the next year.

• Leasing Rebounds: Before the 2007 financial crisis, the leasing market accounted for nearly half of all auto sales but, by 2009, the number sunk to below 10 per cent. Since then, however, lease activity has made a nice comeback, climbing back to more than 20 per cent of sales.

• Competition Continues to Heighten: Automakers are feeling the heat, with their competition causing a stir with redesigned vehicles that boast greater amenities, performance and value than those of previous generations. For example, fuel efficiency has improved by nearly 20 per cent across the board in the last five years and the evolving technology, size, safety and functionality of these vehicles have also expanded.

“As manufacturers look to strengthen their brand and attract new customers, prospective buyers can really benefit from attractive finance offers and the competitive nature of the industry,” said Robert Sadokierski, Head of Automotive Finance, BMO Financial Group. “Additionally, BMO recently consolidated its Automotive Finance Group which is designed to provide an enhanced customer experience more closely aligned with the evolving Canada-U.S. marketplace.

The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is a mid-engined sports car, designed and developed by the Volkswagen Group and manufactured in Molsheim, France by Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.

The Super Sport version of the Veyron is the fastest street-legal production car in the world, with a top speed of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph). The original version has a top speed of 408.47 km/h (253.81 mph). It was named Car of the Decade (2000–2009) by the BBC television programme Top Gear. The standard Bugatti Veyron won Top Gear’s Best Car Driven All Year award in 2005.

On 6 April 2013, Bugatti set the record for having the highest top speed of any roadster in the world with the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, reaching on average a top speed of 408.84 km/h (254.04 mph).

The Veyron’s chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed by Jozef Kabaň of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being conducted under the guidance of engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber.

A number of special variants have been produced. In December 2010, Bugatti began offering prospective buyers the ability to customize exterior and interiors colours by using the Veyron 16.4 Configurator application on the marque’s official website.

In 1998, the Volkswagen Group purchased the trademark rights on the former car manufacturer Bugatti in order to revive the brand. Starting with the Bugatti EB118, they presented at various international auto shows a total of four 18-cylinder concept cars. At the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show, the first study of the Veyron was presented. At the time, the name of the concept car was “Bugatti Veyron EB 18.4,” and it was equipped with a 3-bank W 18-cylinder engine instead of the 2-bank W 16-cylinder engine of the production version. While the three previous prototypes had been styled by Giugiaro, the Veyron was designed by the Volkswagen stylists.

The decision to start production of the car was taken by the Volkswagen Group in 2001. The first roadworthy prototype was completed in August 2003. It is identical except for a few details to the later series variant. In the development to series production, however, considerable technical problems had to be addressed, so that the start of production was delayed repeatedly, until September 2005.

The Veyron EB 16.4 is named in honour of Pierre Veyron, a Bugatti development engineer, test driver and company race driver who, with co-driver Jean-Pierre Wimille, won the 1939 24 hours of Le Mans while driving a Bugatti. The “EB” refers to Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti and the “16.4” refers to the engine’s 16 cylinders and four turbochargers.

Giorgetto Giugiaro (born 7 August 1938) is an Italian automobile designer. He has worked on supercars and popular everyday vehicles. He was born in Garessio, Cuneo, Piedmont. Giugiaro was named Car Designer of the Century 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002.

Gordon Miller Buehrig (June 18, 1904 – January 22, 1990) was a noted automobile designer. Born in Mason City, Illinois, he had early design experience with Packard, General Motors and Stutz. In 1929, he was responsible for designing the bodies of the Stutz Black Hawks entered at Le Mans. At age 25 he became chief body designer for Duesenberg, where he designed the Model J. He joined the Auburn Automobile Company of Auburn, Indiana in 1934, producing the famous 1935 851 Boattail Speedster, based on the work of Alan Leamy. He also designed the distinctive Cord 810/812, the latter recognized for its originality by the Museum of Modern Art in 1951.

In 1949, Buehrig joined Ford, where his projects included the 1951 Victoria Coupe and the 1956 Continental Mark II. He invented the removable T-top, patented 5 June 1951, which was used in the aborted TASCO sports car.

Retiring from Ford in 1965, Buehrig taught for five years at the Art Center College of Design in California. In 1979, he produced the design for the Buehrig Motor Car, a limited-production carriage roof coupe.

Buehrig died in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan on January 22, 1990 at the age of 85. His cremated remains are buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Auburn, Indiana.

Buehrig was one of 25 candidates for Car Designer of the Century, an international award given in 1999 to honor the most influential automobile designer of the 20th century.

• Propelled by Ford’s growth in China, Focus registrations surpassed 303,000 units there to also make it the best-selling passenger car nameplate in China
• Focus is driving Ford’s global growth and is joined by Fiesta to give Ford two of the top five best-selling nameplates in the world

Led by strong growth in China, Focus global registrations from January through September 2013 grew to 856,587, a 16.1 percent year-over-year increase. China was the biggest contributor to the success with 303,481 registrations, representing an 85 percent year-over-year increase, according to Polk, which recently was acquired by IHS.

Focus buyers cite the vehicle’s exterior styling and generous level of equipment as key reasons for their purchase. In China, the top differentiators among car intenders include the vehicle’s design, excellent safety and high quality. Each of these attributes scored 15 percent to 40 percent higher among consumers than the closest competitor.

“Our success with Focus serving more and more customers around the world underscores the strength of our One Ford plan,” said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president of global marketing, sales and service and Lincoln. “We remain absolutely committed to developing a full family of vehicles that, like Focus, offer outstanding quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value.”

Thanks to Ford’s One Ford plan and global product vision, the company now has two of the top five best-selling nameplates in the world – the Focus and Fiesta – with a combined 1,402,555 vehicle registrations during the January through September 2013 period, based on Polk data.

The 2014 CT 200h features additional content even as the starting MSRP drops by more than $500.

New for 2014, the Lexus CT 200h now sports the signature Lexus Spindle Grille that reinforces the vehicle’s low front profile and wide, sporty stance. Additional updates include new front and rear bumper designs, added aero-stabilizing fins, new 10-spoke 16” aluminum alloy wheel design, a redesigned rear spoiler, a shark-fin antenna and LED licence plate lamps.

The 2014 CT 200h is also offered in a new exterior colour – Redline – and all paintwork is now protected by a scratch-resistant, self-restoring top coat.

Inside, the driver-focused cabin seats five passengers and is enhanced to be more pleasing to the eye and more welcoming to the touch. The driver now benefits from a new steering wheel, a new shift lever design, extendable sun visors, a tire pressure monitoring system and a switch to turn off the Traction Control system for more direct control on closed tracks.

Additional enhanced features for 2014 include the available Lexus Display Audio system, including the world’s first use of bamboo-fiber loudspeakers. Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 returns to its racing roots this week when the all-new Camaro Z/28.R race car debuts in a 2.5-hour endurance race ahead of the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona. It will be one of the most production-based competitors on the track, sharing aero, engine and even axle components with the new 2014 Camaro Z/28.

Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport will campaign Z/28.R race cars in the GS class of the IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge. The Daytona race begins at 1:45 p.m. EST, on Friday, Jan. 24, kicking off the 12-race 2014 season.

“The original Camaro Z/28 was designed for racing and became an iconic performance car through its hard-fought victories,” said Mark Kent, director of racing for Chevrolet. “A new chapter in racing begins this week, as the new Camaro Z/28 makes its competition debut in one of the most hotly contested series in motorsports.”

Developed alongside its production counterpart, the Z/28.R  incorporates the same performance elements that make the 2014 Camaro Z/28 the most track-capable Camaro ever. To enhance grip, for example, the Z/28.R’s body shares the same downforce-generating aero package as the production model, including:

• Front splitter
• Rear spoiler with wickerbill
• Hood extractor vent
• Rockers, wheel-house extensions and front tire deflectors
• Belly pan.

The Z/28.R is also powered by the same LS7 7.0L V-8 engine as the production Z/28 and employs the unique, helical-gear limited-slip rear differential found on the production model. It is standard in the Z/28, helping the driver put down more power to the pavement when exiting corners.

“Apart from series-mandated equipment and the specialized suspension components needed for endurance racing, the Z/28.R is as close to a production-spec race car as you’ll find,” said Kent.

Advancing the Z/28 legacy

As Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport kick off a full season of racing in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with their new Camaro Z/28.R race cars, they’ll advance the legacy of Camaro endurance racing that dates to the original Z/28’s 1967 introduction, when it was developed for the Trans-Am series. More recently, the Camaro GS.R won six races from 2011 to 2013 in the Continental SportsCar Series Grand Sport class, helping Chevrolet achieve a runner-up finish in the GS championship last season.

“The new Camaro Z/28.R is a significant advancement from the GS.R that won multiple races in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge the last three years,” said Lisa Talarico, Chevrolet program manager for the Continental Tire series. “We expect the new engine package, suspension components and aerodynamic improvements to help our teams to further successes in the 2014 GS class. The GS class is full of great competitors, and we believe the performance level of the new Z/28.R will provide us the opportunity to contend for a championship.”

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 goes on sale this spring.
